Why I Won’t Like Your Facebook Page (Even Though I Like You)

Follow us on Facebook!

You see that everywhere now. On the back of utility trucks. On restaurant windows. In the corner of TV shows.

Follow us on Facebook!

But most of the time…I won’t.

Why? Because I have no reason to.

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those that say “Here I Am!” and those that say “There You Are!” People follow the latter type.

When you tell me to follow you on Facebook without telling me why, it is self serving. You are collecting likes. You want me to follow you so that you can market to me. Thanks, but no thanks.

When you tell me to follow you because I will get discounts, sneak peeks or special offers, then you have my attention.

Marketing should always, always, always serve the needs of your potential customers. Tell me that if I follow you, you will treat me better than you treat everyone else. Tell me that if I follow you, I can get to know you in ways that other people won’t. Tell me that following you will save me money.

Facebook followers are valuable. They aren’t just a collection of likes. Next time you add a “follow me on facebook” to your marketing collateral, spend a little extra time to tell me why.
